Certification of Persons and Accreditation System

Introduction

ISO/IEC 17024 is an International Standard that establishes requirements for organizations involved in the Certification of Persons. It aims to provide a globally accepted benchmark for reliable certification and prevent negative effects.

This Standard sets out the requirements for the operation of a Certification Body within a specific scope. It applies to various Certification Schemes for different professions or roles, such as Auditors, Engineers, Physicians, NDT (non-destructive testing) Experts and Lifting Equipment personnel, as well as Welders, Electricians and Plumbers and more. Certification of persons provides assurance that the certified individual meets the requirements of the specific Certification Scheme.

ISO/IEC 17024 is applicable to all types of Certification Bodies, regardless of ownership or regulatory authority. It applies to both Public and Private sector organizations certifying persons.

Functions of Certification Body

The Certification Body's main function is to certify individuals and provide assurance to stakeholders that specific requirements have been met during the certification process. One key aspect of their role is conducting examinations using objective criteria to assess and score the competence of the individuals seeking certification. This ensures that certified individuals have demonstrated the necessary skills and knowledge according to predetermined standards and schemes.

Certification Schemes

The Certification Body's scope includes the certification of individuals, ensuring that the Certification Scheme for persons is operated consistently, comparably and reliably. The Certification Body is responsible for establishing and maintaining the certification scheme for persons, which encompasses the principles and requirements for certifying individuals against specific criteria. This scheme serves as a framework for conducting the certification process in a standardized and reliable manner, providing assurance that certified individuals meet the specified requirements. The Certification Body plays a vital role in developing and managing the certification scheme to ensure its effectiveness and ongoing relevance.

Confidence in certification schemes for persons is established through a globally recognized process of assessing and periodically reassessing the competence of certified individuals. However, it is important to differentiate between situations where certification schemes for persons are warranted and situations where alternative forms of qualification may be more suitable.
